Two-day Sci-Tech Fair ends with a call to promote young innovators

The 3rd edition of the Sci-Tech Fair organised by Primetime Limited, producers of the 2019 National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ), has ended at the University of Ghana with a call to promote young innovators to solve problems with homemade solutions.

The two-day event saw a number of participants drawn from both Junior High and Senior High schools exhibiting their projects.

The objective of the annual event has been to give students the opportunity to put to practice the theories learnt in the classroom.

Speaking briefly after the event, the Managing Director of Primetime Limited, Mrs. Nana Akua Ankomah-Asare expressed joy at the successful organization of this year’s Sci-Tech Fair and hopeful it will inspire many other students to venture into technology innovations.

“We are happy for all the amazing projects displayed and it is our hope it won’t end here. Well done to the schools, students and teachers who prepared them for the Sci-Tech Fair.”

Mrs. Ankomah-Asare ended her remarks by making reference to a quote made at the launch of 2019 NSMQ by Dr. Angela Mensah, Director of Secondary Education; “Show me and I will remember, involve me and I will understand.”

Mr. William Mensah, Lubricant Manager from Goil Ghana expressed the interest his company has in improving Science Education in Ghana, hence, their continuous support of the NSMQ and the Sci-Tech Fair.

Schools in both junior and secondary levels were advised start involving their students in the practical aspects of whatever they are taught in the classroom.

A few changes made at the launch of this year’s NSMQ include a new bronze-made trophy customized with the NSMQ logo, as well as a new rule which allows the winner to have the trophy for keeps only after winning the competition for three consecutive times.

Mamfe Methodist Girls’ SHS who won the 2019 world ROBOFEST Competition held in Michigan, USA were guest as they displayed the ArcBot; a device programmed to move black and white boxes into 4 slots which represents a 4-digit binary code.

All participants of the 2019 Sci-Tech Fair were handed certificates to acknowledge their hard work.

Below are some of the projects exhibited by the participating schools of 2019 Sci-Tech Fair:

Students from Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) displayed an Autonomous Robotic Vehicle with the ability to navigate on its own and detect road signs.
This project on display is by students of Don Bosco Technical Institute, and it is the Parapet Storey Building, a building that has been built above roof level, to protect the building from strong winds and bad weather. The students have gone to extra mile to modify the project with electricity.
Another interesting project on display is a Solarbrella, put together by students of Mfantsipim School. The project allows for the charging of items on-the-go with solar power.
All the way from the Upper West region, here is a display by Lawra SHS. They are displaying a multi-purpose box made up of a Phone, Solar panel and Solar charging, an antenna, a PA system, radio and rechargeable internal and external batteries.
We have here on display a Palm Fruit Juice Extractor by students from Pope John SHS. The purpose of this project is to reduce the stress of preparing palm nut soup, a delicacy for many Ghanaians.
Students from Presec, Legon have developed an app called ‘Exeatlog’, which helps in keeping and managing the issuing of exeats in Senior High Schools, and to keep track of student movement. The app also helps parents keep track of their wards, as they are alerted immediately their ward is issued an exeat.
On display here is a Smart Irrigation System, which is able to determine the level of moisture in the soil, and then waters the crops as and when it is needed. This project is by students from Sekyedumase SHTS.
Students of St. Thomas Aquinas SHS have on display the Tire X-Bass, a sound system made from an old vehicle tire. The purpose of this project is to provide entertainment, while saving the environment from pollution and diseases.
